You could get a transient inductive pulse through the cable upon
connect/disconnect that could overvoltage the LED.
Also ESD is something to worry about - especially if using white/blue leds.
I suggest placing a ceramic SMD cap of .01-.1uF right across the led for the
esd.  
Perhaps split the current limit resistance between the source to the jack
and the remainder local to the LED.
For the inductive pulse you may need to have a TVS diode across the LED and
series resistor.
If your remote box with the LED has any ground connection you can get a
ground offset of >60VAC if the hot side of the plug makes first.
Best to have a ground make first connection.
