[sdiy] Favourite flux cleaning ritual?

I use Kester 44 solder and clean the flux (after a day) with a somewhat blunted dental
pick. The flux cracks off the PCB with no chemicals. Most flux removers (imho) are too messy
and make the board a runny gooey mess.
I will 'spot clean' with isopropyl alcohol in really high impedance areas (S/H, EXPO etc) after
the mechanical cleaning.
Spray flux cleaners don't work well for me unless you use the whole can (imho)

How does everyone clean the flux off their boards?
I'm looking for something safe; no toxic fumes or crazy chemicals if
possible. I'll reluctantly admit to rarely cleaning the flux off most
of my personal projects. My only experience with cleaning flux has
been with warm water, dish soap and a stiff brush, which seemed to
work OK.
