On the subject of vias and thermal relief.. I notice that when I am 
soldering with double-sided through-hole boards, it is sometimes very 
difficult to solder to a ground plane, unless the hole has one of those 
"target and cross hair" patterns around it. With these, you get sufficient 
electrical connection but reduce the heat flow so you can successfully 
solder to the plated-through hole & immediate surface.
