Apologies for possibly giving an unclear answer.

I agree with JP - use rare parts for keeping old synths going (I guess  
I thought that was what the OP meant...)

One of the best tips I've seen in recent years is Ian Fritz's  
transistor matcher circuit. For non-experts like me, it opens the door  
to using common trannies in matched-pair applications for VCOs and the  
like, instead of having to use expensive unobtanium components.  
Happily, tempcos are still being made.
