My very first encounter with synth DIY was when I was 11 years old (that
would have been 1976). I spent much of my time drooling over the PAiA
catalog. A neighbor kid bought a Gnome kit for us to build, which we
attempted in my basement, where my dad did some minor ham radio projects.
We had no idea how to read the schematic, and I remember that the build
instructions were very poor. There was a note included which said that the
transistor pins were all backwards from how they were shown in the
documentation. As if that wasn't bad enough, my friend didn't want to use
flux on the solder joints (and since he bought the unit, my vote didn't
count). Needless to say, the Gnome didn't work. That was my last encounter
with synth DIY until four years ago.
I hope you have better luck with yours!
