I still really like laying out circuits by hand in Excel.  Admittedly, it
sucks for digital circuits, but for analog circuits it's actually pretty
easy.  However, I wouldn't recommend it to anybody (except for breadboards
-- it does make those a whole lot easier, and the commercial packages are no
help at all there!).
