The first thing I tell people to do (I post on a circuitbending forum, although rather less frequently these days since forums are so awkward and take up too much time) is to fire up Google and search for datasheets for every chip they can see.  Who knows what goodies lie within?  A quick squint at the datasheet and you can see straight away what might be a promising avenue to take - and what might just blow the backside out of your new toy.
