Hi Bob.
As well as the widely-used TL071/TL072/Tl074 op-amps which you probably
already know about, another chip to maybe check out is the LM13700 dual
OTA. There are other OTA chips out there that are of higher spec (and
cost), but for many synth apps it is perfectly adequate. All sorts of
things - LFOs, VCAs, VCFs, phasers and other fun circuits can be built
with them.
FWIW, there is a very useful page on the MFOS website showing how you
can build many useful logic circuits (if that interests you) using a
40106.
