The protocol appears to have changed significantly. The old version
identifies itself as a USB Storage class device and accepts commands via
a pseudo SCSI interface. The new protocol no longer appears as a storage
device, so the Linux kernel doesn't know what to do with it and the
corresponding device isn't created in /dev.
There appear to be several Linux stlink apps out there however. One is here:

which is the one I have been using and appears to only support the V1
protocol. Gordon Pearce mentioned another one:

which may support both - I'm checking it out now.
It's possible to set up Eclipse + ARM GCC under Linux - many folks do
this. Not being a Java coder it's not the development environment that I
prefer though, so I haven't pursued it.
