Do you have some 74150? You could clone the touch keyboard of the EMS synthi :-)

Another synth circuit that used a TTL chip (a 7413 schmitt trigger AFAIR) is the elektor Formant VCO.

I always liked one of my first noise-makers that was just a 74121 non-retriggerable monoflop fed with a square wave. Turning the knob for the mono-time gave me both PWM and frequency division.
