[sdiy] Op amps (was Re: TI SN74LS624N, worth buying?)

otoh the 741 is built like a tank, has good drive capability, and does not suffer from
phase reversal when driven to the rails. I'd still consider the 741 for a bulletproof
(if noisy) output driver.

I used to drive 8ohm headphones directly from a 741 :^)

Hi John,

The 741 was the very first op-amp I ever learned about. There was a time when all the standard circuits in op-amp books used 741s. It's a pretty noisy little beasty and I wouldn't use it any longer, even if I do still have a soft spot for it.

The TL series are more modern but still pretty old. We'll be generous and say "classic". You'll find them inside any of a million synths and amps and such like from the last thirty years.
It was my understanding that the 08x were low DC offset, the 07x were low noise, and the 06x were low current. All basically the same chip, but optimised for difference characteristics. I never used the 081/082/084 much, but I used to use the TL064 in guitar pedals because it gave a much better battery life than the others.

HTH,
Tom
