I think you may be able to save a few $$$ if you aren't averse to a 
gender change. (Ooh, er!)

Female 0.1" headers ain't cheap. The best I've found are on eBay, in 
pairs with male ones (which you don't have to use.) I cut them down with 
sidecutters (you generally lose one position doing this) then finish 
them off with a file.

But if you can work with a male header and female patch leads, the male 
headers are available on eBay nice'n'cheap, and there are a few vendors 
selling 40-way ribbon cable terminated in individual female connectors. 
  (I believe that Seeedstudio also carries the latter.)
