I've just switched on my Proteus 1, it looks like it's side lit from
each end of the screen rather than behind it so maybe just one end has
gone from yours. New 2x16 LED backlit displays are very cheap on Ebay
but usually they're a bit thicker - that Densitron page does say 'low
profile edge light options for thinner displays'.
