In quite a few cases in the past it has been down to the email client 
configuration: this list server does not accept emails in HTML format - 
they must be plaintext.

In Jay's case I would guess that his email client defaults to HTML 
format but preserves existing format.  Taking a plaintext email received 
from the list and replying to it will keep it as plaintext and so it 
gets through, but new emails are in HTML format and get silently dropped.

That's my guess for what its worth.
