Hi Bruce and all,
The MQX Real Time OS support for Kinetis is free from the Freescale Web
site. The CodeWarrior tool chain is free for applications that are 128K or
under in size. Then it goes to about $500.00 for the next rung of the
Ladder.

The Keil and IAR tools are supplied for The TWR K60-KIT as an example:

IT&parentCode=K60&fpsp=1
So you see, inexpensive tools or free in some cases. We have removed the
barriers to using ARM Cortex M4 processors.
This is a very reasonable price for the experience and the quality is quite
high.
I gave discount coupons for 50% off for the TWR kit when we launched the
product a year ago. I gave away quite a bit of tools at our recent DIY Synth
workshop At Cambridge UK. Last July.
For Less than $300.00 you can get a full license, debugging JTAG uLINK-ME
and TWR Kit. This is a far cry from the figures you quoted.
The Kinetis Cortex M4 with 32-bit Floating Point @ 120 MHZ , DDR interface
and new SAI audio interface starting shipping 2 weeks back.
I really hope you look a bit deeper into what I am showing you and perhaps
give me a revised assessment.
Best regards,
Terry
