So it seems i solved it; i guess i must have misunderstood something
fundamental of how SPI works; i'm not using a hardware SPI interface
but doing it in software and i noticed in the datasheet under the
timing section that there was two diagrams how you'd get different
rise and fall times when tying Dout to VDD vs GND through a resistor
and having a cap to GND. Since i always got rows of 1's i figured this
corresponds to a cap not being discharged so despite this not being in
any of the hook-up examples i tried it and it seems to work. Is this
something that's usually built-in into SPI receivers?

Btw. tried sending this from my normal e-mail, still doesn't work.
Have tried subscribing again but it only says i'm already subscribed.
