I had a problem with that too. I read it again and again. I concluded that the term "switch" was used loosely to mean an input control and not necessarily a make/break circuit. The author is Japanese and I find that culture plays a big part in vocabulary when English and Japanese language meet.
I have no first-hand knowledge of how the Tenori-on truly operates. I just connected the dots.
