I'm into the AVR too recently making a double/quad lfo and VC ADSR.
For your front analog input have a look at what Alain Coupel did for the electric druid LFO : http://www.acxsynth.com/edruidlfo/edruidlfofr.htm

PS : I don't know which avr you are using but I would go for another DAC (yours is 8 bits resolution only ,will use plenty of pins and needs a Vref )like the microchip MCP4822 (which has 2 12 bits dac into an 8 pins package with an internal vref !! ;-) - use SPI tought).
