i remember learning on a DIP altera, so i looked to see if they still  
make those,
didn't find them, but I DID find these two devices (in stock) from  
Atmel:

smaller on is 24-pin dip 10 macrocell, 100 MHz.    $5.15
the larger one is a 40-pin dip, 24 macrocell. 50 MHz, $7.55

anyone use these?  mini-review?
