According to industry reps every time I ask it, RAM is the most expensive (greatest die area) component in the device.  The vendors weigh the market against cost and produce something they think they can sell for a competitive price and still make money.

But for what price?  And what else did it have?  What was its purpose?  And who was buying it? - which reflects the reality that some big consumers of devices can skew the perception that a certain design is commonplace.
