FWIW - stuff like this is why I asked the question.

My concern is that with a pot as a voltage divider, the only thing between the voltage end and ground is a mechanical pot - and generally these are fairly wide tolerance.

I was more concerned about having a stout wall to keep unwanted stuff out of ground than a stout supply of 0V.
