Actually, I've modeled this idea in an FPGA with high Q band pass state
variable filters. Here is a short piece of music using an early
version of this instrument:

The article covers some of the details and there are 2 MP3s posted in
the article, the first is just some demo diddling around, the second is
a piece of music I wrote.
Generally, the filters can be excited with an impulse and their natural
exponential decay is used instead of an EG. There are envelope
generators that affect the pitch.
