I know the opamp replacement questions is a perennial one on the list and
my own experience is mixed. On my Memory Moog, when I did my massive
overhaul a few years ago, I replaced the opamps in the audio chain with
nice Burr Browns and couldn't really notice any improvement. On the
otherhand, my Arp 2600 had all the old opamps (LM741 I think) in the audio
chain replaced and it definitely sounds better. I'm in the midst of
overhauling and racking my SEMs which have always been my favorite
sounding mono synth. However, these have been sitting in a closet for
around 10 years so I'm hearing them again with fresh ears and I have to
say that there is a distorted quality to the sound that I'm not sure I'm
crazy about. So, *if* I were to go and pull the opamps in the audio
chain, what would be good candidates? Pros, cons, and should I even
bother also welcomed!
