The question is, how good of a VCA are you trying to make ?
Good cutoff ? Low distortion ? Low CV feedthrough ? Wide range ...?
I like the VCA from the PAiA2720 if you want to use a semi-discrete
design, ot why not the CA3080 of LM13600/700 ?
OTA have reasonably low component count, good to very good performance.

Subject: [sdiy] very simple VCA circuit
Hey Team,
I'm looking for a very simple voltage-controlled gain circuit that I can
build with, say, one BJT or JFET. It only has to handle positive voltages,
and the gain range will be confined to 0 to 2.
I've tried simulating some JFET circuits from the web on Multisim, but have
had no luck. Any link to a schematic for a tried and tested circuit would
be most appreciated, preferably one you've tried yourself.
