And for a bit of historical perspective along those lines, I remember being *blown away* by the Roland D-50 when it first came out (although I immediately noted that the DSS-1 could do many of the same tricks, but the D-50 did a better job of marketing it as a "new" feature.) I bought an MT-32 right after it came out and spent a lot of time with it when I was an undergrad. ;)
