Sounds familiar. Many years ago I had a similar problem with a self- 
made MIDI device. It worked with all MIDI Outs I could get hold of,  
exept one. It was someone from this list who advised me that the  
CNY17 I was using is just too slow for MIDI. I replaced it with a  
PC900 (not pin-compatible!!) and all was fine.

Looking at the picture of the A-190-1 on Doepfer's homepage I see  
that there's a CNY17-2 on the circuit board....
