[sdiy] (OT) Doepfer MIDI-CV oddity

A hidden weenie I have found (that sounds like maybe the case here) is when a manufacturer does not follow the MIDI spec properly and
makes a ground connection via the MIDI cable. I had a device (not Doepfer) that would not play nicely, exactly like you report. Using another units
MIDI-THRU broke the errant connection and it worked fine. I eventually went inside the bad unit and cut the offensive pin away.
I use 5pin DIN cables for MIDI with all pins connected. Some people have reported that a proper MIDI cable has only two wires (for the LED connection) so maybe
a cable will set you straight as well...

If all else fails I'd capture the two MIDI streams using appropriate
software and compare them side by side. Maybe you can see a difference
between the two that gives you a better idea what goes on.
