Fortran is still used heavily in math intensive and legacy code. So for instance, geological survey result processing (oil hunting with ground thumpers), biochemical modelling, fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, weather forecasting and so on. I bet that UCI have a bunch of legacy stuff on campus as well. You did say an engineering degree rather than a narrower discipline so it is no surprise really. Just thank the universe it isn't Cobol!
