I have a gut feeling that the easy answer is "YES", and I can't help
feeling that the perceived advantage of 'sniping' programs may be
getting over-rated here.

If I put a proxy bid of 15 quid on a Synthi 100 I expect to lose to a
higher bidder, either quickly or via a 'sniper'. If I proxy bid a
sensible amount then, as has been stated already, sniping programs
simply give their user no time to second-bid on an item; yes I am
probably showing my hand too early in this card game, but with 3 aces
who cares?

I have never used a sniping program but still win the odd item in this
game.

OK, flame away...
