That's exactly what I want: something with a few knobs that lets me  
find nice scales.

Most four-pole low pass filters have only two knobs, one for cutoff  
frequency and one for gain. That's a simplification (4th order low  
pass is described by four parameters), but obviously a very useful  
one. I believe a filter with four knobs, one for each transfer  
function denominator coefficient, would be less useful.
