Well, using a filter ultimately involves twiddling a knob or two, so it's
not really a fair comparison!  ;^)

However, understanding the construction of scales is a heckuva lot easier to
wrap your head around than poles, zeroes, and transfer functions in the
Laplace domain!  There are 12 chromatic tones, and you've gotta leave a few
of them out to make useful scales.  Not exactly rocket science!

In any case (and in all seriousness), let your ear guide you!
