I've gotta think that the Coolaudio clone killed off the SSM2164. It's a
fairly popular chip, I would have thought, given it's combination of
performance and price, and I don't think that Coolaudio will stop making the
V2164 anytime soon. After all, they still make clones of all the BBDs, and
who uses those anymore?
Of course, if we all ordered a few thousand of them, that might help!
Ten years from now, just about every analog chip will probably be
discontinued anyway. I think the days of analog electronics are numbered.
In any case, DIP will probably disappear, along with anything intended for
dual supplies. It's already getting hard to find some types of analog ICs
with supply ranges larger than a few volts.
Let's face it: There's just no room for Heathkit in this iPhone world.
