Whilst I can confirm that it DesignSpark works (at least it starts and 
was able to register) under Wine on 64-bit Debian Linux, boy is it SLOW! 
I could install it in a Windows VM (XP Home/VirtualBox - very fast,) 
think I'm more inclined to pursue native applications. Firing up VMs is 
a PITA.

Don't know if there's an equivalent to Wine for OSX (or if Wine runs 
under OSX) - and if it runs any better than on Linux.
