For those interested in the digital noise-making I referred to in the 
eVilBay thread, current design is:

555 -> CPLD -> 10-bit parallel load DAC

...where the CPLD is set up to be a 10-bit version of that described in 
Don Lancaster's TTL Cookbook, pages 277 through 281 ("The Pseudo-Random 
Sequencer.")

Settings for "proper" noise and "weird Space Invaders" noise by changing 
the 555 frequency :-)
