Overkill in what way ? DIN 41612 connectors with fewer contacts
exist. 64, 48, 32, 20 and 16.

With card edge connectors, you *must* have a PCB made.
Improvising something on the spot with strip board or vector
board is not an option. That's a big drawback in my eyes.
