It is generally ill-advised to do this with a table band-limited for higher 
resolution.  The proper way of doing this is to provide different tables 
with progressively reduced resolution and bandlimiting, like the DW6000.

It would also go against Matt's stated intention of having a variable-rate 
system.  A better solution might be to replace the uC by something more 
specifically targeted to the task of synthesizing a clock, like the 
LTC6903/6904.
