Many thanks for that!  I'm looking to get the hardware design of the 
platform sufficiently flexible that I can try both the phase accumulator 
and timer approaches.  Barring the actual EEPROMs, everything on the 
board is in-system programmable.

Question I'm starting to ask myself is whether I really *need* the full 
MIDI range. Heck, a piano doesn't do the full MIDI range and I've never 
run out of notes on one of them before! (If I were to exceed the piano 
range, it would be at the low, not the high end. I likes me some 
sub-bass ;-)
