Gloves won't protect your fingers in this case and can present safety 
problems themselves if you use the wrong ones (especially for very thin 
sheets, which are most dangerous).  Clamp the piece down on a block of wood.  
If you do one size of panel more often, build yourself a jig that can hold 
it firmly.
