As an old fart, it took some time for me to change my traditional way
of thinking (10 years ago that would have been my first suggestion
too) - but today it has become more reasonable to just attach an SPI ADC
than to use support chips, which in the end may need glue logic (not in
this case, but the 4051 consumes 3 hardware select bits).
I favour the MCP3208. Comes from PIC world, but works fine with ATMega.
BTW, the MCP4922 is an equally sexy SPI DAC chip, and dirt cheap too.
