I've got bits lying around all over the place at the moment. I'm slowly

For all the size of it, you may as well pull down the whole repo. The
idea is that the simpler stuff will be available as bare avr-gcc sources
and Arduino sketches, with the more complex stuff being only avr-gcc
where the Arduino boilerplate gets in the way.
Both programs as presented ought to work. If you change the baud rate
in Serial.start() to 31250 then you should be able to use a normal MIDI
interface to drive it. I use an ALSA-seq-to-serial bridge program which
isn't cleaned up enough to show to the public yet, which is why it's set
for 57600 baud. I'll try and get the ALSA bridge up at the weekend.
