I'd be curious to know at what octaves you can start skipping - if I 
were to start with 1024 or 2048 samples per cycle down the bottom (from 
MIDI note 0) and ended up with 256 samples up top (up to MIDI note 127,) 
where would be the break points?

Would certainly mean slower devices could be used (like my ATTiny2313.) 
At MIDI note 127, 256 samples per cycle needs scanning at 3.2MHz, but 
2048 samples per cycle needs a whopping 25.7MHz.
