I think it's safe to say that Arduino is not a great choice for digital 
audio processing--unless you're looking for "chiptunes" sounds. It's 
fine for making MIDI controllers, on the other hand.

Arduino is a good introduction to microcontrollers, especially for 
non-technical folks. I'm helping a high school student (my son's best 
friend) build a MIDI-controlled harp for his senior project. He's 
learning circuit design, circuit board layout, PCB fabrication, 
microcontroller programming, CNC design and production, and soldering. 
He probably wouldn't have started the project without the Arduino 
showing him how easy it is.
