I believe it is usually done simply by feeding the noise through a bandpass
filter with V/O control over the cutoff.

IIRC, one of our number (I can't remember who now... Yves Usson, perhaps?)
had a really quite astounding audio sample of pitched noise using a
voltage-controlled fixed filter bank a while back.
