So what about the slat-wall approach?  I don't remember if the brackets were angled from the wall or horizontal.
Is it worth messing with?  Is it regarded as a useful approach or just a good way to store/sell  your stuff?  Pretty expensive probably unless you come across a deal like I did.

BTW, before kids, I had made a desk height surface on one wall out of used doors.  Then 1x12 pine above for test instruments and storage. 
This was very functional but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to get away with it today - whatever I do has to be more studio-like and attractive.

We went to a tile/wood flooring place the size of a Home Depot a few days ago and man they had some cool looking wood flooring.  Should be able to make nice cabinets or whatever with them at low cost.
