[sdiy] OT: Repairing tape decks?

Hi Karl.
I have found that this type of problem is usually mechanical from my past
experience - but maybe I was just looking @ older devices.. .
Although some newer models do have opto coupled sensors a majority old the
older ones have a micro switch or even a mechanical switch to stop the feed
at end of tape
I have recently recovered a couple of Tape decks .
My old Denon DR-M30HX - just needed a lube and clean and it had been in the
loft for 10 years!
And a couple of Yamahas had to mess around with pinch rollers and belt on
one and an jamb the other.
Why you ask - well wanted to see if Cassette tape was going to add any
noticeable compression or audio friendly qualities like Reel to reel would
trying to analogue up my DAW output.
Also I have a Volume 1 of Tape Recording Service manual 1968-1970 by John
Gardner published by Newnes-Butterworths
Not sure if there are latter additions that might cover this device - its
detailed full schematics and service procedures etc..
I follow a few of my local (UK south cost) freebee giveaway mail lists and
there is usually a tape deck on there at least one a week. So worth a try if
you can't get this one working.
Regards Mark

Probably I'd suspect most electrolytics and then re-lubricate where
applicable. The greases and oil points turn to sticky mush over time and
the caps just dry out...

(casette) and so far i've already thrown away two broken ones and about to
do the same with this third one, but i figured maybe someone knows how to
fix these things. Being mostly mechanical i'm at a loss..

(it's a dual), one side plays and sometimes rewinds - otherwise anything i
do (play, rewind, forward) makes the decks give an "end of tape"-behavior,
in other words it sounds like it tries to move the tape but fails and
decides it's at the end of the tape and shuts down the operation. As far as
i can see, all the rubber bands seems to be OK. The deck is a Technics
RS-T230, i've seen there are service manuals out there but they cost ~5
times what i payed for the actual deck...
