That looks good, especially considering the price. I haven't checked out
the software yet, but since the trace length is limited by the hardware, it
will be very important to have flexible triggering options.
I use a Saleae Logic and an Intronix LA1034 (plus a PropScope), you'll
probably get more recommendations for both... :-)
The Logic is probably the smallest 8ch logic analyser you can find (they've
added a 16ch version now at just under double the size). For the maximum
sampling rate it needs to be connected to a "direct" highspeed USB2.0 port
(not through a hub, although that works at lower speeds), which may not be
available on some laptop computers. As long as the computer can keep up,
that allows for arbitrarily long traces. The software is very easy to use
and they have versions for Win, OSX and Linux.
The interesting part about the LA1034 is that it has very low demands on the
USB side since it is only using it to transfer the trace data to the
computer, all sampling and buffering is in hardware. Unfortunately that
means relatively short traces even when compression is on, on the upside it
can sample synchronously with an external clock. The software does still
run on Win98SE after installation of some .Net stuff, so I use my old PIII
notebook (which has a 10" touchscreen) to have a "standalone" instrument.
The analysers for serial protocols are a bit limited even though there are
many options to customize them.
Regards,
Achim.
