Thanks for all the responses so far! I'll just clarify a few things:

I should have been more specific in my first post, but this is for
producing a run of 12 boards each with approx 200 resistors and 16
quad OP-amps. Lead-free would be nice to do as well. So my goals are
to speed up the production process.

>It's not synthesizer-related, but the Kanga Finningley software defined radio kit is all SMT except the sockets.  It's an excellent first project, with everything laid out really clearly in the instructions. It's worth even just grabbing the PDF of the assembly instructions off the site for a read.

Thanks Gordon, I'm a fairly new HAM and that kit looks really fun.
