The current archive unfortunately starts with post #1, so unless you would 
invalidate all links to the archive you can't easily prepend messages from 
the old list.  A separate archive is easily created with mmarch once you've 
created a new list (like synth-diy-old) and put the mbox file in place.  You 
can then remove that list (the archive is not deleted by default) and link 
to it from the listinfo of synth-diy.
