One of the most exasperating faults I saw was caused by a zener 
intermittently going open circuit when warm. Imagine what happens when the 
supply to a preamp jumps from 12 to 30V. Damn near ended with me being 
punched out by an aggrieved bass player.. got it fixed by a smarter friend 
at the last minute! Last time I ever offered to do repairs.
