[sdiy] O'scope recommend - remove the graticule

Television CRTs use magnetic deflection rather than electrostatic (like scopes do)
so making a vector display out of them might be a bit of a challenge. Could be done
at low frequencies at least...

I used an old telequipment scope with the graticule removed, and a large lens (6" diameter) to make
a projection 'video show' using my synth to drive it. Woked quite well but not very bright...

Could you modify an old CRT telly or monitor?

There are loads (skipsful) of nice large CRT screens kicking about for no money (=very cheap experiments) and I've seen various sites with mods to make them into oscilloscopes. After all, the guts of it is a ramp for horizontal scanning and a signal amplifier for vertical deflection - not beyond the likes of us, I'd have thought. Just be careful not to zap yourself.

I remember seeing such a thing at the Exploratorium in San Francisco back in 1989. It struck me then as a pretty cool thing to do, and given that memory has remained with me whereas most of last week is a blank, it must have made quite an impression ;)
